SRE Testimonial
Paul Smith
Where do you teach?
My name is Paul Smith and I teach SRE full time across the upper hunter region. I work in Singleton, Scone and Muswellbrook High Schools. A normal day consists of teaching year 7 or 8 pupils about God, His word and His Son Jesus. Each day is a challenge but never boring. In one lesson I can deal with questions such as ‘Where was God born?’ to ‘Does God hate homosexuals?’
What's your approach to teaching?
I try to use a variety of resources and different teaching techniques to engage all pupils in the lessons.
How did you get started?
I started teaching SRE in 2007, part time at Kurri Kurri High School whilst studying at Bible College. During my time there I attended an SRE training day, where I became aware of this full time opportunity. After rejecting this opportunity initially I later realised that this was a vital ministry which God wanted me to be a part of. We have a great opportunity in this state to tell people about Jesus in state high schools through SRE, and it is an opportunity we should not waste.
How has Genr8 helped you?
Genr8 take care of all the legal aspects of the SRE job. Since churches employ me, Genr8 help to formalise contracts and ensure that I am looked after. They also make sure that the boards are doing things the right way, according to the letters of the law – however tedious that may be. Genr8 help enhance the image of an SRE teacher and give them a little more professionalism – even though we only do what we do by the grace of God.
